Atletico Madrid are reportedly not considering a contract extension for Antoine Griezmann, amid links with a move to Major League Soccer.

According to Spanish publication Marca, the Spanish side are trying to reduce their wage bill and with Griezmann being one of their top earners – plus the fact he will be 35 when his contract expires in 2026 – they may let his deal run down. On the flip side, the report adds nobody at the club doubts the Frenchman could stay past 2026, but only if he continues to deliver strong performances – and perhaps on reduced wages.

The 33-year-old is an Atletico legend, having scored a record 181 goals while adding 84 assists in 389 appearances. Together, they have won the Europa League, Supercopa de Espana, UEFA Super Cup and been a force on the European stage. But if the former Barcelona man doesn't stay at Atletico, who he has said he wants to be his last team in Europe, a move to MLS does appeal to him.

Last year, Griezmann said when quizzed about his long-term future: “Saudi Arabia? I understand those who have to go there; we’re talking about incredible sums of money. Could I go? I have a family, three children. It’s not an easy decision to make. The MLS is still my priority.”

Griezmann, who helped France reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024, is currently enjoying his summer holidays but will return for pre-season duty in the coming days. The new La Liga season begins in mid-August, where the World Cup winning-forward will look to be back to his best.
